Under the supervision of the Middlebury College Archivist and other Special Collections staff, and with funding from The Katherine Kaess Christensen 94 and Matthew Christensen Archival Fellowship Fund, the main responsibility of this position is to process and catalog The Eugene Exman Papers. These papers include rare books, archives, manuscripts, correspondence, and ephemera in accordance with national and Middlebury Library standards. This position supports public outreach of The Exman Papers through social media and other outreach activities.

This is a part-time, grant-funded one year appointment and considered a non-benefits eligible position. The hiring range for the position is $18.63 - $22.82 per hour, 16-18 hours per week.

Core Responsibilities:


  • Arrange, describe, and catalog book, archival and manuscript materials that comprise the Eugene Exman Papers
  • Create EAD XML finding aids in ArchivesSpace and MARC records for archival, bibliographic, and manuscript materials
  • Promote The Eugene Exman Papers through exhibitions, instruction sessions, and other outreach activities

Requirements


  • Masters Degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited institution, current enrollment in a Library or Information Science Masters program, undergraduate or graduate degree in history, religion, literature, or a related field
  • Minimum of one year or less experience in the arrangement and description of archival and manuscript collections
  • Awareness of and willingness to learn about ArchivesSpace and other content management systems; OCLC Connexion
  • Knowledge of current library and archival descriptive metadata standards including DACS, EAD, MARC, MODS, DCRM(MSS), RDA/AACR2, LC authorities, Dublin Core, MODS, and METS
  • Strong customer-service orientation and interpersonal skills with an ability to communicate effectively
  • Experience writing for an online, public audience and creating social media content

Physical Demands:

  • This is a part-time, on-campus position with the possibility of occasional remote work
  • Occasional lifting up to 50 pounds and load, unload, and maneuver book trucks
  • Frequently stand, sit, stand, squat, bend and climb up and down ladders and step stools
  • Occasionally lift objects above shoulders or over the head
  • Occasionally work in areas prone to dust or mold with appropriate personal protective equipment
