then Sustainability Service Corps is for you!

Sustainability Service Corps (SSC) is a bridge-to-career AmeriCorps Fellowship program that delivers professional development to emerging climate protection leaders who implement projects related to sustainability, education, and community engagement for municipalities, nonprofits, schools, and disadvantaged communities across California.

Program term dates are: November 2023- June 2024, 40 hours/week

Program Benefits

  • $2,754.54/per month living allowance stipend (pre-tax) spread evenly over your program term and distributed every two weeks

AmeriCorps Requirements

  • Be a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident of the United States*
  • Ability to pass FBI, CA Department of Justice, out-of-state (if applicable), and National Sex Offender Public Registry background checks prior to service

*Currently, we are unable to accept applicants with student visas (such as F1 or F2 student visas, J1 or J2 exchange visitor visas, G series visas, etc.) or those with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status.

Sustainability Service Corps Requirements

  • At least 18 years of age
  • Test negatively for tuberculosis if working with minors
  • Adhere to COVID-19 vaccination or testing requirements determined by host organization
  • Live in the state of California
  • Commitment to the full term of service (1700+ hours and 11 months for full-time term)
  • Capability to work in a professional office or field setting
  • Strong verbal and written communication and teamwork skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Passion for community-oriented climate change solutions and interest in launching a career in sustainability
  • Experience with, or training in, climate science, sustainability, environmental justice, education, community outreach, and project management
  • Past service experience (e.g., volunteering, community service, etc.)
  • Associates degree or above AND/OR relevant experience
  • Being local to the community where you will serve

ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION

KIPP Prize is a 5-8 charter middle school that opened in 2014 and serves 415 students.

Mission: At KIPP Prize we know that some of the most competitive and robust opportunities in life and career exist in our own backyard, and we prepare our students to be able to access those opportunities. We provide a rigorous literacy-based, college prep curriculum combined with an emphasis on personalized learning, character, and a diverse range of cultural and enrichment experiences to enable our students to access the opportunities in Silicon Valley and beyond.

POSITION OVERVIEW & DESCRIPTION

The school garden coordinator will be responsible for bringing the vision of a working school garden to life. The garden will be a place for sustainable education, food equity and real-life skills. The garden will also serve as a therapeutic space and support a vision for sustainability and food equity in our community.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Coordinator:

  • Plans and leads sustainable, organic, environmentally conscious garden activities for grades 5-8 students;
  • Assists in the design and maintenance of the school gardens and outdoor classroom space, supporting the preparation for garden work activities, planting schedule, and ensuring the care of tools;
  • Integrates environmental issues, wellness, and garden activities into school curriculum;
  • Develops a system for recruitment, training, coordination and tracking of volunteers;
  • Oversees and coordinates students hands-on experiences in the garden (planting, tending, harvesting and cooking);
  • Builds involvement in and commitment to the school garden within the school community, including teachers, administrators, students, parents and community volunteers;
  • Builds capacity within the school by co-teaching with classroom teachers, and developing teacher skills in outdoor classroom management techniques;
  • Leads a group of students in garden-related action projects through after-school programming;
  • Attends school wide staff meetings;
  • Leads after-school garden club;
  • Pursues grants to support the growth and development of the Garden Program.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least 2-3 years of facilitation or teaching experience with youth aged 10-14 (outdoor group management experience preferred);
  • Knowledge and skills in small-scale organic food production or home gardening;
  • Knowledge of or interest in topics including urban gardening, botany, environmental science, health and nutrition, food systems, food access;
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations including youth and adults;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including public speaking skills;
  • Ability to work independently and be flexible;
  • Computer skills and project management skills;
  • Regular and reliable attendance and dependability.
