Friends of the High Line seeks a dynamic, operations-minded professional to join our Environmental Services Team as their new Environmental Services Supervisor. This is a supervisor position reporting to the Manager of Environmental Services and is expected to work on-site, primarily the evening/closing shifts.

The Environmental Services Supervisor (ESS) is a working position that also holds accountability for the day-to-day operations and management of the High Lines Environmental Services team. In addition to maintaining the general hardscape of the High Line, the ESS is an ambassador to the public, contributing to our all are welcome spirit.

The successful candidate is an energetic and approachable colleague, a tireless advocate of the Environmental Services team, and adept at assessing and promoting the needs of the team.

This is a hands-on role supporting the team, requiring daily work outdoors in all weather conditions. Responsibilities include all aspects of monitoring, caring for, and reporting on designated park zones, offices, hardscape elements, restrooms, cleanliness, and public use of the park.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Clean and maintain assigned Park Zone.
  • Oversee other Park Zones/HLHQ to ensure staff is keeping their area to High Line standards, perform daily checks
  • Lead and oversee special projects as assigned.
  • Train EVS staff on how to dispose of biohazards.
  • Train EVS staff on how to properly clean and use material/equipment.
  • Ensure supplies/inventory are properly maintained throughout the Park, report to EVS Manager/Director of Facilities
  • Work closely with the Maintenance team for special projects, and keep an open line of communication between teams to ensure the Park is kept at the best standards.
  • Assist with Park opening/closing as needed.
  • Pest control, removing rodents, etc.
  • Assist EVS Manager/Director of Facilities in developing policies and procedures for all aspects of cleanliness, safety and long-term maintenance.
  • Use of equipment, such as a scissor lift, power washer, snow broom, etc.
  • Assist with snow removal.
  • Develop and maintain a climate of achievement, fostering staff morale and building team spirit.
  • Work alongside field personnel, orchestrating daily workflows and ensuring proper and timely execution of tasks.
  • Maintain a high standard of cleanliness throughout the park and office spaces.
  • Provide consistent positive and constructive feedback to staff.
  • Communicate consistently, liaising between all High Line departments.
  • Ensure proper removal of garbage and recycling.
  • Ensure food commissary areas are clean.
  • Assist with special events, as needed.
  • Assist EVS Manager/Director of Facilities in developing assessment tools to determine whether park is meeting its cleanliness goals.
  • Interact with park visitors in a professional manner.
  • Work a schedule that varies to meet park needs, including weekends, nights, and holidays.

Requirements

  • Sound organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Flexibility to work long hours, holidays, and weekends as necessary
  • Must be a team player, willing to collaborate on any and all tasks required for maintaining the highest standard of park operations.

Abilities

  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions on a 1.65-mile-long above-ground park
  • Must be able to move heavy loads of refuse/recycling
  • Must operate heavy machinery, ie, scissor lift, snow broom
  • Must come in for snow events

This is a Full-Time, Non-Exempt position.

Actual salaries will vary on various factors, including but not limited to experience and performance. The hourly rate is set at $31/hour.

The location for the role remains hybrid, with a requirement to physically report to the office (located in Manhattan's Meatpacking District in New York City).
