UCSs Climate & Energy Program

The Associate Director of Just Climate Resilience will help develop and lead key aspects of the Climate and Energy Programs Just Climate Resilience agenda, under the direction of the Policy Director, and working closely with the Director of Government Affairs and the Sr. Climate Campaign Manager. The position will focus on strategy, policy design and development, community engagement, and advocacy and research efforts that can help drive the widespread adoption of science-based, equitable policies at the local, state, and federal levels.

The Position

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to:

Serve as a collaborative leader of the C&E programs just climate resilience policy agenda

  • Under the direction of the C&E Policy Director and working with other UCS Climate and Energy program staff, lead the planning, designing, and implementing of just resilience policy development, research activities, and projects in support of the organizations efforts to advance just climate resilience policy at the local, state and federal levels.
  • In close collaboration with the C&E Policy Director and the C&E Gov Affairs team, play a lead role in managing inclusive engagement processes, both internally and with external partners, to help inform C&E resilience policy development, priorities, and strategy.
  • Serve as the UCSs lead climate resilience policy expert, leading the development of resilience policy positions and innovative and effective federal, state and municipal resilience policy. Coordinate closely with regional teams (California, Midwest and Northeast) on state and local work.
  • Collaborate on planning, designing, implementing and leveraging UCS analyses to guide and bolster advocacy and policy positions.

Foster and Maintain Collaborative and Strategic External Relationships

  • Provide expert technical and strategic assistance to policymakers, opinion leaders, and coalition partners.
  • Respond to inquiries and comments from stakeholders, media, members, sponsors, and the public about resilience-related issues; promote UCS positions and objectives.
  • Establish and maintain alliances with advocates, community partners, and researchers at other organizations and government agencies to exchange information, share resources, and engage in collaborative work.

Serve as a lead spokesperson for just reliance policy

  • Serve as a lead spokesperson for UCS, through media print, radio, and TV interviews, write LTEs and op-eds and blogposts.
  • Represent UCS, its philosophy, and its positions at workshops, hearings, conferences, and public forums.

PEOPLE MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY

As appropriate, supervise other policy, advocacy or analytic staff, consultants and interns. Supervisory responsibilities could include hiring, assigning work, directing, and managing and evaluating performance. Oversee assigned work, help triage competing priorities, provide support and guidance, and ensure internal approval protocols for publications and administration are followed. Guide, mentor, and develop junior staff to support their professional growth and enable them to assume greater responsibilities on behalf of the program and its work.

Requirements

Qualifications and Experience

  • Position requires comprehensive knowledge of the field of climate resilience policy, with deep demonstrated expertise in its equity and justice dimensions.
  • Work requires five to seven years of comparable experience and a proven track record in policy analysis and advocacy, with a focus on equity and justice.
  • Masters degree preferred in public policy, environmental studies, public health, social sciences, or relevant field can be substituted for experience.
  • Demonstrated track record of effective supervision, mentorship, and team management.
  • Candidate will have strong skills and experience in influencing policy and legislation in at least two of three arenas: local, state and/or federal.
  • Detailed understanding of resilience-building strategies in varying geographies and demographics, and in response to the interaction of various climate, environmental and socioeconomic impacts.
  • Excellent skills in writing and oral communication, as well as proficiency in computer applications such as Microsoft Office Suite.

At UCS, comparable training and/or experience can be substituted for degrees when appropriate.

May spend extended periods at computer.

WORK SCHEDULE

Some late hours and/or weekends may be required in connection with events, rapid response, or critical deadlines.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

Moderate travel is required, including up to 1-2 overnight trips per quarter, and occasional visits to DC and Cambridge offices if working remotely.

Details:

This is a full-time remote position based in close proximity to UCSs DC or MA office. For those who meet all position requirements, the salary range is $114,671-$129,000. UCS offers excellent benefits and a rewarding work environment. *CA Resident Only, we offer a 12% salary differential*
