YouthBuild USA, located in Roxbury, MA, is the nonprofit support center for YouthBuild programs. It provides technical assistance, innovative program enhancements, quality assurance systems, and advocacy to help ensure that every YouthBuild program can create impact in its community.

AmeriCorps is a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), an independent federal agency whose mission is to improve lives, strengthen communities, and foster civic engagement through service and volunteering. YouthBuild USA is a recipient of an annual $10.9 million AmeriCorps National Direct grant which brings support to over 60 YouthBuild programs and 2,500 YouthBuild students enrolled as AmeriCorps members providing direct service through the construction of low-income affordable housing. YouthBuild students enrolled in an AmeriCorps position receive additional and increased service and skill development opportunities by their program, deepening the impact within the community and making service a more central part of their YouthBuild experience. In addition, upon successful completion of their service, AmeriCorps members receive a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award that can be used towards post-secondary and career education costs.

Requirements

Job Summary

The AmeriCorps Portfolio Manager Position is a full-time position, reporting to the Director of AmeriCorps Programs. This position works within a team of Portfolio Managers and Financial Grant Managers responsible for offering cohesive and consistent support to all YouthBuild AmeriCorps sub-grantees. The main responsibilities of the AmeriCorps Portfolio Manager are to train, monitor, and support a portfolio of 15-22 YouthBuild AmeriCorps programs, that are sub-grantees of YouthBuild USA, in three general areas:

  • Implementation of YouthBuild AmeriCorps program design elements
  • Understanding of and implementation of AmeriCorps programmatic grant compliance requirements and systems
  • Progress towards and achievement of YouthBuild AmeriCorps program goals and objectives.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

Technical Assistance

  • Establish a positive and supportive relationship with a portfolio of 15-22 YouthBuild USA AmeriCorps programs that allows for the effective delivery of on-site and remote technical assistance.
  • Gain familiarity with and become a content expert on Federal Regulations and Provisions to assist programs with implementing their AmeriCorps program and maintaining compliance.
  • Utilize existing technical assistance tools and create reports and updates on portfolio of assigned YouthBuild AmeriCorps programs.
  • Create and facilitate technical assistance tools, including webinars, conference calls, videos, sample documents, and instructional guides.
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of YouthBuild USA AmeriCorps conferences. Develop and co-facilitate the delivery of program related conference content.
  • Support the YouthBuild AmeriCorps risk assessment, designed to use data to improve program performance and practice.
  • Assist programs with the intentional implementation of AmeriCorps driven service learning and service leadership into the YouthBuild program design to help students understand and identify with National Service.

Monitoring

  • Ensure compliance with federal regulations and investigate issues of non-compliance.
  • Travel on average, once every two months, to conduct in-person program monitoring and training site visits. Approximately 7 visits a year.

Grant Administration

  • Assist in the promotion of the AmeriCorps partnership to interested YouthBuild programs not currently part of the initiative.
  • Participate in the application review, scoring, and clarification feedback process for new and previously funded YouthBuild program applicants during the annual continuation and tri-annual re-compete application process.
  • Support the implementation of a tri-annual independent research evaluation by facilitating documentation, data, and survey requests.
  • Assist in the resolution of AmeriCorps special requests from the Office of Inspector General and/or AmeriCorps Headquarters which may include the collection and review of program member, staff, and financial records.

Other

  • Collaborate with the team to ensure that consistent monitoring and technical assistance is provided to all YouthBuild programs that receive AmeriCorps member slots and operating funds.
  • Participate in cross-functional work teams to support the overall mission and objectives of YouthBuild USA.
  • Serve as a representative of the team within YouthBuild USA by traveling to YouthBuild programs, multi-site gatherings, conferences, and assisting in the planning and implementation of YouthBuild USA activities as requested.
  • Due to travel responsibilities, this position requires a valid drivers license.

Desired Skills, Characteristics, and Experience

We are looking for an intelligent, results-driven team player with superior judgment, clear communication style, and programmatic experience.

The ideal Manager will have:

  • At least three years of program and/or management experience, preferably in organizations that have a network of programs/affiliates or comparable experience;
  • At least a bachelors degree; a masters degree is a plus;
  • Experience with AmeriCorps, AmeriCorps VISTA, and/or the Corporation for National and Community Service a plus;
  • Experience with YouthBuild or other youth development organizations a plus;
  • Having served as a member with AmeriCorps, AmeriCorps VISTA, or similar National Service program also a plus;
  • A record of accomplishment working in diverse work environments;
  • A demonstrated ability to think and act strategically, tactically, and creatively in a fast-paced environment;
  • Ability and comfort with multiple long-term projects having different foci and deadlines;
  • Ability to take complex information and break it down to more effectively communicate with sub-grantees;
  • Comfort with presenting in front of a large group;
  • Experience with program assessment, including an understanding of survey development, data interpretation, and the use of data to improve program practices;
  • A drive to problem-solve;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • A customer service orientation; and
  • A collegial approach to work, ability to be flexible, and a sense of humor.

This position is funded by YouthBuild USAs AmeriCorps National Direct grant and will require the completion of a National Service Criminal History Check prior to employment.
