Job Description

The Desert Research Institute (DRI) seeks a GIS/Remote Sensing Specialist at the Staff Research Scientist level (Rank 1) or Assistant Research Scientist level (Rank 2) to assist in the processing and analysis of remotely sensed data. This position will support current and future Department of Defense (DOD) funded projects that require geomorphic investigations and characterization of terrain and soils at the surface and near subsurface. The successful applicant will perform primary job functions and be part of a large, interdisciplinary team in the Integrated Terrain Analysis Program (ITAP) which provides important soil, geomorphic, and terrain analysis capabilities within the Division of Earth and Ecosystem Sciences (DEES).

This position involves the following research support activities:

  • Assist in the data collection, analysis, and mapping of soil surface composition with the use of hyperspectral data collected from uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS)
  • Analyze data acquired from aircraft, satellites, or ground-based platforms using statistical analysis software, image analysis software, or Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
  • Organize and maintain geospatial data and associated documentation.

In addition, the candidate should be familiar and comfortable with basic report writing and technical editing and be willing to learn how to collect field data, often in extreme environments. Other responsibilities may include assistance in a wide variety of Quaternary geologic and geomorphic projects as opportunities and needs arise. These efforts include producing Quaternary geology and soil maps, landform identification and characterization, soil and sediment sampling/description, and general support of field research activities.

Required Qualifications (Rank 1)

  • U.S. Citizenship per sponsor funding requirements;
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Geography, Geology, Earth Science, or related field from an accredited institution at the time of the start date;
  • Basic knowledge in geomorphology, Quaternary geology, or soil science;
  • Demonstrated field experience;
  • Valid drivers license required (or ability to obtain one by date of hire);
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Team player with diverse research interests and excellent interpersonal skills;
  • Demonstrated experience using standard GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS Pro) and generating map products, and familiarity performing geospatial analysis techniques with direct application to Earth Sciences;

Required Qualifications for Rank 2 (Rank 1 requirements plus):

  • Two years of hands-on experience in utilizing GIS software as a primary function in either work or academic settings
  • Demonstrated experience with calibration of remote sensing datasets;
  • Demonstrated experience with scripting languages (e.g., Python) and automation of GIS tools.

Preferred Qualifications

  • FAA Certified Remote Pilot under Part 107;
  • Experience collecting UAS-based data with a variety of sensors;
  • Experience using hyperspectral data analysis software, (e.g., ENVI);
  • Demonstrated experience using photogrammetry processing software (e.g., Pix4D Mapper, Agisoft Metashape Professional);
  • Interest or experience using remotely sensed data to map spatial distributions of soil properties;
  • Interest or experience performing field descriptions of geomorphic, stratigraphic, and/or soil morphologic properties;
  • Interest or experience working with data from fluvial, lacustrine, and deltaic environments;
  • Demonstrated experience compiling, writing, and editing scientific reports or other scholarly products.
  • Master of Science Degree in Geology, Earth Science, or related field from an accredited institution at the time of the start date;

Conditions of Employment

  • Due to security requirements associated with accessing essential project sites and information, ALL applicants MUST be citizens of the United States.

  • Valid drivers license required (or ability to obtain one by date of hire);
  • Must have the ability to work on DOD instillations.
  • Must be able to travel and to work in harsh field conditions for extended periods of time (i.e., southwest deserts in the summer, cold regions, tropical regions), walk/hike across uneven terrain, and ability to lift heavy equipment (40+ lbs.)

Compensation and Benefits

Minimum starting annual salary for a Staff Research Scientist is $56,267 and the minimum starting annual salary for an Assistant Research Scientist is $79,597. The final starting salary will be commensurate with the successful candidates education and experience. DRI offers a benefits package that includes health, dental, vision, life, and long-term disability insurance; including 17.5% retirement contribution with match, 24 annual leave days, beginning balance of 30 sick leave days, 12 paid holidays, educational benefits, and the choice of three health insurance plans that can be supplemented with flexible spending accounts or health savings accounts. Additionally, there is no state income tax and no social security deduction. This position is eligible for relocation assistance.
