Summary:

The Building Service Worker I (BSWI) for the Department of Residence Life is responsible for the routine cleaning, sanitizing, disinfecting, and day-to-day upkeep and presentation of all designated interior and exterior department areas including but not limited entrances, offices, residence halls, apartments, townhouses, the central offices, laundry rooms, conference rooms, classrooms, study rooms, lounges, storage rooms, walkways, stairwells and other common areas. This position involves and requires hands-on attention to detail-work and location of work is anywhere under the department umbrella. BSWI will work under the direct supervision of any of the following: Department BSWII (if applicable), Assistant Facilities Manager, Assistant Director of Residence Life, or the Director of Residence Life.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Clean floors, stairways, carpets, hallways, entryways, lounges, conference rooms, study rooms, laundry rooms, designated classrooms and computer labs, and other common areas to department standards using appropriate tools and equipment. This work involves high and low dusting of surfaces, washing/wiping walls, cleaning door glass, cleaning wall partition glass, cleaning window glass (interior and exterior), wiping hard surfaces, cleaning appliances, wiping the faces of vending machinery, dusting and waxing furniture, wiping doors and trim, cleaning display cases, cleaning furniture, vacuuming, mopping, buffing, stripping and waxing tile floors. Work may involve moving furniture and or small items/appliances to clean under and around. Work may involve ladders to reach high areas.

Upkeep of trash rooms and recycling bins/areas to department standards using appropriate tools and equipment. This work involves the emptying, cleaning, and sanitizing of trash and recycling containers as well as the room/area themselves. This work also involves the emptying of containers to proper bins for removal.

Clean public bathrooms, lavatories, and restrooms to departmental standards using appropriate tools and equipment. This work involves cleaning, sanitizing of floors, sinks, mirrors, toilets, urinals, floors, partitions, walls, ceilings/lights as needed, and the refilling of paper products. This work includes emptying, cleaning, and sanitizing of trash and sanitary bins as well as refilling soap dispensers. Work may involve ladders to reach high areas.

Clean designated offices and office kitchens to department standards using appropriate tools and equipment. This work involves high and low dusting of surfaces, washing/wiping walls, cleaning door glass, cleaning wall partition glass, cleaning window glass (interior and exterior), wiping hard surfaces, cleaning appliances, wiping the faces of vending machinery, dusting and waxing furniture, wiping doors and trim, cleaning display cases, cleaning furniture, vacuuming, mopping, buffing, stripping and waxing tile floors. Work may involve moving furniture and or small items/appliances to clean under and around. Work may involve ladders to reach high areas.

Assist in special projects/events such as resident room turns; conference room turns; power-washing of designated areas; sweep and/or shovel snow from steps and walks at building entrances and connecting walks; locking and unlocking of rooms/areas; and cleaning after program events, remodeling, or construction.

Make observations and report issues of concern for equipment, items, and/or facilities property that need replaced or repaired to supervisor and fill out work requests as needed. Use best judgement in reporting concerns about the building, residents, and safety of all to direct supervisor and department heads as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma or Equivalent

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Knowledge of cleaning solutions and custodial methods and equipment.
Ability to comprehend and follow verbal instructions.
Ability to read and follow written instructions, directions, labeling, and measurements.
Ability to tolerate extended use and exposure to cleaning chemicals.
Experience and exposure to Windows-based computer applications (word, spreadsheets, outlook).
Reliable transportation and/or valid drivers license, accessible phone.
