The Edmonton Chamber of Commerce (Chamber) is the official voice of business in the Capital Region. With thousands of business and corporate members, we are one of the largest chambers in Canada and among the most influential business organizations in the country. The Chamber fosters and supports the business environment in the Edmonton region through advocacy to all levels of government, education and support opportunities, and connection to local and business communities.

Reporting to the Vice President, Communications, Governance and Advocacy, the Director, Policy and Government Relations is responsible for researching, developing and maintain policies for the purposes of serving the members and business community of the Chamber. This role will keep current on relevant government initiatives and programs that might impact current or future opportunities for the Chamber and its members.

What will you do?

Responsible for leading, mentoring and growing a team of high-performing individuals who will work together.

Strategically identify skills and resources required for the department to ensure organizational goals and objectives are met.

Ensure new and existing staff have sufficient training and resources to provide professional and competent service delivery.

Manage employee relation issues in the department in accordance with accepted HR practices and policies including performance.

Anticipating trends and identifying patterns in data and evidence to shape the Chambers research, policy and knowledge mobilization (education and business community engagement) strategy.

Responsible for cultivating and nurturing a range of relationships and partnerships and publicly representing the Chambers research and policy agenda in several venues.

Accountable for representing the Chamber through various avenues including writing, presenting at conferences, and engaging with policy makers and other key audiences.

Provide anticipatory thinking to proactively advise the VP and senior management of policy trends that are most relevant to achieving the Chambers goals.

Work closely and partner with other department directors and executive to provide mid to long-term planning and strategic direction of the Chamber.

Build and maintain the profile of the Chamber as a leader and partner in the business community policy and research field.

Develop a network with third party stakeholders and represent the Chamber on relevant committees and partnerships as required.

Provide support to the VP and other Directors on policy related matters as required.

Understanding the value proposition of business opportunities identified in the Government Relations strategic plan for Edmonton, Alberta and Canada and driving funding and closing revenue opportunities.

Developing relationships with key government departments and agency stakeholders to effectively promote the organization and its business objectives and uncover new opportunities.

Monitoring, advocating, and lobbying for legislation and regulation related to potential business opportunities.

Monitoring domestic and international developments in anticipation of potential impacts to the organization (ex. free trade agreements).

Keeping current on relevant government initiatives and programs that might impact current or future opportunities for the Chamber, through meetings with government departments and agencies.

Support the VP in identifying, analyzing and prioritizing the impact of existing and emergent legislative/policy issues on Chamber members and the business community.

Monitor local, regional, provincial and federal issues.

Supporting the VP in the development of the government relations strategy.

What do I need to succeed?

An undergraduate degree in Business, Public Policy, Political Science, business, or a related field.

8-10 years of progressively responsible experience in government or public/government relations including experience in supervising and managing employees including management experience.

Established relationships with officials in government departments and agencies.

Strong knowledge of government department or agency decision making.

Demonstrated ability to influence government decisions and secure funding.

Demonstrated experience in policy research, analysis and development.

Experience preparing public communication materials and reports.

Experience in branding and marketing strategies and initiatives.

Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously under tight deadlines.

Considerable proven experience in leading the production of policy and research outputs including full policy and research programs, reports and surveys.

Strong research and writing skills.

Proficient computer skills and experience utilizing graphic and presentation software.

Effective management, coordination, and event execution skills.

Professional interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written with the ability to work with internal and external stakeholders at all levels.

Expert knowledge of government policy-making and legislative processes with the ability to interpret and explain legislation.

Ability to make responsible decisions in accordance with prescribed policies and practices.

Ability to learn and carry out complex assigned tasks.

Ability to foster and maintain trusting and dependable working relationships.

Demonstrated attention to detail and the ability to work quickly while maintaining a high degree of quality and accuracy.

Ability to maintain confidentiality of information and make responsible decisions in accordance with prescribed policies and processes.

Microsoft Proficiency in Outlook, Excel and Word.
