This position is located in Rochester. This position will work in the field and may be expected to work in the office on occasion.

This position performs, trains, and directs others in performing skilled installation, alteration, maintenance, and repair of MnDOT Regional District traffic signals, roadway lighting, IT systems and other electric and electronic devices. Additional duties include providing lead work direction to district traffic operation personnel, maintenance personnel, integrators and other helpers; reviewing, monitoring, and maintaining records of the operational conditions of those electrical and electronic systems; and ensuring that electrical installations associated with MnDOT Electrical Services traffic control devices are in compliance with national and local electrical codes, and with MnDOT construction specifications and standards, and are properly and safely operating.

Frequent in-state travel is required; this includes some in-state overnight travel.

  • MnDOT does not sponsor applicants for work visas or Optional Practical Training Extensions for STEM Students. Individuals must be legally authorized to work in the US at the start of employment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Registration with the Department of Labor & Industry as a Class A Master Electrician.
  • Valid Minnesota CDL, Class A or B License without Airbrake Restrictions.
  • Two years of current experience working on traffic signals or traffic management devices that demonstrate:
    • Leadership skills sufficient to provide leadwork direction that includes prioritizing and assigning job duties, directing, guiding, and reporting on work activities of other staff.
    • Ability to use standard electrical tools and electrical test equipment.
    • Ability to interpret electrical plans with knowledge of national and local electrical codes.
    • Ability to work with electrical systems of various AC and DC voltages.
    • Knowledge and application of electrical construction practices and materials.
    • Knowledge and application of safety practices, safety standards, and workplace regulations.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Experience with roadway construction practices and materials relating to traffic signals and freeway lighting systems.

Physical Requirements

A pre-placement physical examination is required for this position. Current employees who have successfully bid or are moving into a different functional work area will be required to complete the pre-employment physical exam for the area they are moving into. The scope of the physical exam will be limited to whether the employee can safely and effectively perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, in compliance with state and federal law.

In addition, the incumbent will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. New employees must pass a pre-placement drug test for evidence of use of marijuana, cocaine, opiates, phencyclidine (PCP) and amphetamines (MDMA, MDA and MDEA) and acetylmorphine (6-AM).
