SWCA Environmental Consultants are seeking a Lead Archaeologist for the Arizona offices. The Cultural Resources Lead Archaeologist is a core member of the Cultural Resources Program, responsible for staffing, fieldwork, research, report writing, quality assurance/ quality control review, managing client, agency, and tribal relationships, as well as winning and delivering on projects.

This is a regular, full-time, salaried position. The position is based out of the Arizona region supporting our three Arizona offices (Tucson, Flagstaff & Phoenix) but is open to highly qualified candidates who prefer to work remotely.

What You Will Accomplish

  • Project implementation to include staffing, fieldwork, research, report writing, and Quality Assurance/ Quality Control (QA/QC) review.
  • Maintain good working relationships with state and federal agency contacts and clients.
  • Nurtures and develops client relationships.
  • Organizes and creates best practices and processes.
  • Supervises personnel in the field, office, and laboratory.
  • Collaborates closely with SWCAs managers, directors, and principal investigators.
  • Maintains SWCAs high standard of scientific ethics and quality assurance
  • Motivated to identify and resolve problems in creative ways.
  • Collaborates as part of an interdisciplinary environmental team.
  • Assists in the continuing development of SWCAs Cultural Resource Program and expanding SWCAs professional reputation in cultural resources consulting and research throughout Arizona and beyond.

Experience And Qualifications For Success

  • Bachelors Degree in anthropology, archaeology, history, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of ten (8) years of experience in cultural resources management (CRM) on a variety of project types, sizes, regions, and agencies, with increasing levels of responsibility.
  • Minimum of five (3) years of experience in CRM in a supervisory capacity, whether in the field or in the office.
  • Experience managing CRM projects, including budgets, scheduling, and scopes of work.
  • Extensive experience with Arizona or Southwest archaeology.
  • Demonstrated experience in federal, state, and local laws and regulations related to the management of cultural resources (NEPA, Section 106 of the NHPA)
  • Has provided QA/QC review of field documents, site forms, and reports.
  • Team-orientated attitude with strong leadership and mentoring skills.
  • Qualified for listing on cultural resources permits in Arizona.
  • Has worked on an interdisciplinary team of subject matter experts and planners.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters Degree in anthropology, archaeology, history, or a closely related field.
  • PI-permitted preferred, but Field Director level considered.
  • Meets the Secretary of the Interiors Standards and Guidelines for Archaeology.
  • Experience in renewable energy and/or transmission business lines is highly preferred.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to changes in project needs, agency requests, and more.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a variety of colleagues, clients, and agency representatives.
  • Excellent technical writing skills with a record of completing technical reports and projects in a timely fashion.
  • Experience in cultural resources projects across the West.

An employee in this Arizona-based position can expect an annual salary of $75,400.00 - $98,280.00(link removed) Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law. Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
