Duties

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION***

Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provides technical support of highly complex electronic systems such as audio/visual, security, nurse call, sterilizers and patient wandering equipment and/or systems;
  • Adapts methods and techniques to perform scheduled and unscheduled preventive maintenance and ensure operational safety;
  • Performs development work on major units, comparable individual devices, or assemblies;
  • Designs test systems and setups and uses these to measure and develop criteria to evaluate feasibility and reliability of design;
  • Advises instrumentation users on redesign to solve unique operational requirements or deficiencies;
  • Troubleshoots and corrects system malfunctions on complex microprocessor-based systems;
  • Plans and performs scheduled and unscheduled (emergency) maintenance on equipment;
  • Performs duties as the Contacting Officer's Representative (COR) and has responsibilities which involves the monitoring of performance contracts;
  • Serves as a technical advisor and consultant to engineers and medical personnel on proper operating of existing equipment, purchase of new electronic equipment, planning of new systems, and modification of existing systems to meet special needs;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:00am to 3:30pm

Qualifications

To qualify for this position at the GS-9 level, you must meet one of the following:

Experience: You must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-8) in the Federal Service that has given you the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of an Electronic Technician, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience includes: Working as a technician, instructor, inspector, or mechanic (civilian or military) that showed progression in theoretical and practical knowledge of electronic theory, and of the characteristics, function, operation, and capabilities of a variety of types of electronic equipment. This experience must have included the use of schematic diagrams, a variety of test equipment, and the application of appropriate electronic formulas involved in such duties as testing, troubleshooting, modifying, designing, calibrating, installing, maintaining, repairing, constructing, developing, and instructing on electronic equipment, or similar functions. Experience in developing policies, standards, and procedures for maintenance, installation, or similar functions, provided the work clearly shows that the applicant applied a specialized knowledge of the theories and principles of a variety of electronic systems or equipment. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week. ~OR~

Education: Successfully completed two (2) full years of graduate education or a master's degree or an internship that is directly related to the work of the Electronic Technician position in the field of electrical engineering, electronics engineering, or electronics technology. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. Combination: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate level education (beyond the first year and one-half) and specialized experience, as described above, which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level. The education portion must include graduate courses directly related to the work of the Electronic Technician position in the field of electrical engineering, electronics engineering, or electronics technology. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation.

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Requirements: The work is primarily sedentary with some walking, standing, bending, carrying, etc. Typically, the person in this position sits comfortably to do the work. The work is performed primarily in an office setting.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience.
