Marathon Petroleum Company LP has an opening for a Project Engineer at its renery located in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The Instrument and Electrical (I&E) Project Engineer will be responsible for managing projects and providing technical support to area team projects from early conceptual engineering through detailed design, construction, and project completion. The I&E Engineer will report to the Engineering Supervisor and have responsibility for coordinating and providing I&E support to overall project needs and scope. Projects will range in size up to $10,000,000 and will include both capital scope and expense scope needed to properly maintain and optimize existing operating units. The hours of the position are 9/80's and support TAR as needed. This position will be based out of Marathon Petroleums Salt Lake City Refinery in Salt Lake City, UT.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide engineering support during all stages of project development (Conceptual, Feasibility, Definition, and Implementation stages). Provide technical input and review to ensure detailed engineering meets corporate engineering and industry standards. Work with project team members on project justification and economic analysis to ensure projects meet objectives. Prepare budgets, cost estimates and DSPs (Decision Support Packages) for presentation to management to obtain approval and funding.
  • Manage multiple projects and assignments in a timely, safe, and cost-effective manner.
  • Interact with project team members, key refinery stakeholders, and corporate SMEs to ensure that the project scope is clearly defined and meets the requirements of the end user.
  • Directly responsible to manage, address issues, provide direction and track progress of engineering contractors. Coordinate activities of multifunctional project teams consisting of owner and contract employees.
  • Generates CWPs (construction work packages). Defines technical specifications for equipment. Completes hazard, operability and maintainability reviews. Prepares resource forecasts (funding, equipment, materials, facilities, contractors, company personnel) and finalizes Project Execution Plan.
  • Ensure assigned projects comply with all applicable MPC and electrical industry standards and recommendations throughout all phases of the project (e.g. NEC, IEEE, ANSI, NFPA, API, NEMA, etc.)
  • Review and approve proposed changes to electrical process safety information (PSI) documents, including site one-line and electrical area classification drawings.
  • Aid in maintenance and training development for new electrical equipment installed on assigned electrical projects.
  • Support construction and commissioning of assigned projects.
  • Collaborate with Procurement to develop and implement procurement and contracting strategies to meet project requirements. Define technical specifications for equipment and materials acquisition. Review design drawings and specifications and coordinate input from stakeholders. Participate in technical reviews with engineers from contract firms and equipment suppliers.
  • Ensure compliance with refinery policies and procedures, including stewardship of project management of change (MOC).
  • Work with Project Controls to ensure optimization of forecasting within budget, cost and schedule parameters. Maintains accurate and current project documentation. Provide documentation and support to Operations and Maintenance department so they can develop start-up manuals, operating and maintenance procedures, and equipment training.
  • Potential to work extended hours, including nights and weekends, in process operations environment and during periods of inclement weather. Access areas of refinery requiring use of stairs and/or ladders to inspect critical process and mechanical equipment. Respond to upset conditions during off hours.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelors degree (or above) in an Instrumentation/Electrical Engineering discipline from an accredited institution
  • Minimum one (1) year of post-degree engineering experience in petrochemical or manufacturing industries
  • Must be authorized to work in the US without the need for employment visa sponsorship now or in the future
  • A valid drivers license is required
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Five (5) years of post-degree project engineering / management experience in a refinery or chemical plant
