We are actively seeking a dynamic Engineering Manager who will be responsible for end-to-end solution design, development, and execution and is passionate about managing multiple data driven initiatives in the supply chain, e-commerce, operations optimization, and network optimization spaces. The Engineering Manager will lead a team of data engineers that identify and deliver value for highly complex data-driven initiatives. Applies intuitive and professional understanding of industry-relevant Data Science, Analytics and Machine Learning Technology and frameworks to build innovative solutions leveraging the latest advancements in cloud computing. Works closely in collaboration with other functional areas such as decision science, product design, and other enterprise teams/business partners.

This is a manager and doer role, where familiarity with the details of the work and the tech stack will be essential. Likelihood of being deeply involved in code, design, data/business architectural reviews, and deployment. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a high degree of personal accountability, value-driven, consistently exhibit a bias to action, demonstrate clarity under conditions of uncertainty and change, and possess a strong sense of outcome orientation!

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, a related quantitative field such as Engineering or Mathematics or equivalent formal training or work experience.
  • Extensive knowledge in data engineering and machine learning frameworks including design, development and implementation of highly complex systems and data pipelines.
  • Extensive knowledge in Information Systems including design, development and implementation of large batch or online transaction-based systems.
  • Strong understanding of the transportation industry, competitors, and evolving technologies.
  • Experience providing leadership in a general planning or consulting setting.
  • Experience as a leader or a senior member of multi-function project teams.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • A related advanced degree may offset the related experience requirements.

Job Summary
Takes ownership and responsibility for the support the design, build, test and maintain data pipelines at big data scale. Leads a team responsible for modeling and development to support operations initiatives, strategic programs and new products and solutions. Strong background and experience in the use of advanced descriptive, diagnostic, predictive, prescriptive and ensemble modeling, advanced statistical techniques, and complex mathematical tools. Uses expertise to lead a team that initiates and delivers projects and develops end-to-end solutions that drive business results, including proofs-of-value for new business problems and production-ready solutions for operations and customer-facing products. Understands and ensures development of solutions supporting the movement of data and information assets following API-First / Service-Oriented Architecture principles. Advances Dataworks broad capabilities to use and deploy cutting edge data science and machine learning tools in Dataworks projects, platforms and products. Provides expert consultation and thought leadership to senior management. Mentors other team members to drive results and effectively collaborates with cross-functional teams to deliver business goals.

Job Description / Responsibilities:
  • Lead a team responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining all application software and data pipelines for real-time/batch analysis, modeling, reporting, and data collection, ensuring data reliability, efficiency, and quality.
  • Collaborate effectively with other groups in FedEx Dataworks including Data Science, E-Commerce Products, Supply Chain Solutions, and Platform Engineering to deliver high value platform enhancing capabilities and customer centered solutions.
  • Ensure delivery teams build, deploy, and maintain data processing infrastructure that supports complex analysis across data science, product, application development and strategic teams.
  • Evaluate and implement best practices such as API-First/Service-Oriented Architecture principles, tools and processes for web-based application software, APIs, data access and analysis, including large data sets.
  • Ensure adherence to best practices to ensure reliability, resiliency, security, privacy, and compliance for all data assets.
  • Coach and mentor other team members to drive results and effectively collaborates across cross-functional teams to deliver business goals.

Skills / Abilities:
  • Expertise in software development in back office and/or commercial domains
  • Compelling track record of designing and deploying large scale technical solutions that deliver tangible, ongoing value
  • Strong background and experience in the use of sophisticated descriptive, diagnostic, predictive, prescriptive and ensemble modeling, advanced statistical techniques, and complex mathematical tools
  • Ability to context-switch to provide support to dispersed teams to unblock especially challenging technical obstacles, and to work through problems as they are still being defined
  • A design mindset embracing ambiguity combined with an engineering mindset willing to make rapid, pragmatic decisions to improve performance and accelerate progress.
  • Experience in the transportation industry and understanding of evolving technology.
  • Familiarity with analyzing large-scale structured and unstructured data using Scala and Python.
  • Experience working in Big Data technologies like Spark, Kafka, etc., with a solid understanding of best practices.
  • Development experience within Cloud technologies like Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud platform.

This position can be domiciled anywhere in the United States. The ability to work remotely within the United States may be available based on business need.
