As a Manufacturing Design Engineer (MDE) at Facebook, you will take on a critical role in bringing AR/VR to our customers. You will work side-by-side with an engineering team that is leading innovation in this exciting new product category. You will be responsible for developing and maintaining manufacturing processes within Metas mechanical and camera module supply base. Meta is looking for an experienced and self-motivated Manufacturing Design Engineer. The successful candidate will lead the development of manufacturing processes for the mass production of complex camera systems within a fast-paced manufacturing environment. You will develop novel assembly processes and fixtures and assist in resolving manufacturing issues as needed. You will take an opportunity driven approach to identify manufacturing processes that would benefit from automation. You will use critical thinking while working closely with manufacturing associates to assure cost, delivery and quality objectives are met.


Camera Manufacturing Design Engineer (MDE) Responsibilities:

  • Work with engineering team and strategic sourcing team on the vendor selection (SPOR).
  • Development support during the product design phase to provide input dealing with manufacturability needs (DFM) for camera/optical and related components. Work with suppliers, review and approve fixtures and process DFM.
  • Drive manufacturing process development and innovation for AR/VR devices. Work with internal cross-functional team as well as supplier on process needed for camera Lens/module assembly from DFM to line bring up and qualifications. i.e. camera/optical lens coating and assembly, active alignment, film/lens lamination etc.
  • Collaborate with camera/optical vendors to evaluate their manufacturing process capability and develop MP intend equipment to meet product needs.
  • Assist vendors in developing and qualifying new or improved fixtures, automation and manufacturing processes (including critical process parameters) to enhance quality and production efficiency.
  • Evaluate supplier processes and process controls to ensure product quality and reliability is built in. Develop supplier capability (including necessary training), establishes proper reporting of in-process inspection, final inspection, and test results.
  • Participate in cost reduction and yield improvement efforts.
  • Collaborate with the PD Team to determine critical part features and review manufacturability of design. Make recommendations to modify part specifications and tolerances as necessary to adapt development processes for high volume production and support cost effective production.
  • Domestic/Overseas traveling up to 25%
  • Lead, discuss, negotiate with multiple cross function team members & vendors



Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS or MS in Optical or Mechanical, EE, physics or a related field
  • 5+ years of hands-on experiences in camera or optical module design or manufacturing
  • Hands-on experience in camera module assembly, active alignment processes, fixture design, or process integration/ optimization/ validation
  • Experience using statistical tools for data driven decisions
  • Experience managing FA (Failure Analysis) to solve issues and improve yield
  • Experience working on consumer electronics, ramping high-end products and collaborating with cross-functional teams



Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience on optical lens or optic film fabrication
  • Experience creating summary documents with powerpoint or keynote with good presentation skills
  • Experience communicating in Mandarin
  • Familiarity with FMEA or other risk assessment methods
