Correctional Unit Supervisor (CUS) - Permanent and Acting
Clallam Bay Corrections Center (CBCC)

Open to permanent Washington State Department of Corrections employees only.

The Department of Corrections is seeking highly motivated and qualified individuals for the permanent and acting positions of Correctional Unit Supervisor at Clallam Bay Corrections Center.

Clallam Bay Corrections Center is a 900 bed male facility located on the point of the Olympic Peninsula. It is 50 miles west of Port Angeles and looks out over the Strait of Juan de Fuca at Vancouver Island. This facility houses medium and close custody offenders. CBCC also operates a Restricted Housing Unit.

Duties

Supervise, monitor, and direct the operations of an incarcerated living unit to include security practices, incarcerated individual program assignments, sanitation of units, and compliance with DOC custody policies and operational memoranda.
  • Ensure all safety standards associated with the living unit are consistent with expectations that are mandated by local, State, County and Federal guidelines and local facility standards
  • Direct the security and accountability of incarcerated individuals assigned to the unit.
  • Ensure the living unit sanitation level is consistent with expectations that are mandated by local, State, County, and Federal guidelines.
  • Ensure inspections/searches of incarcerated individuals, incarcerated individual property, and living unit to include program and other areas of the unit, are completed in accordance with established Department policies and procedures.
Plan, direct, and/or supervise the work of living unit staff, which includes Support Staff, Counselors, Correctional Officers, and Correctional Sergeants.
  • Establish and prioritize performance expectations for staff utilizing core correctional practices.
  • Monitor work performance; investigate and take appropriate corrective or recommend disciplinary action.
  • Conduct timely employee performance evaluations and ensure proper training is provided.
Plan, direct and monitor unit programs.
  • Coordinate scheduled activities to enable all Incarcerated individuals the optimum availability for participation.
  • Ensure resource information is made available to incarcerated individuals regarding programs and transitional opportunities.
  • Create and support incentive programs and awards to promote unit morale and positive behavior.
Oversee, conduct and/or participate in hearings, investigations and meetings.
  • Oversee and/or conduct infraction hearings and classification hearings. Ensure all Incarcerated Individual due process rights are afforded and applied in an objective and impartial manner.
  • Serve as a Disciplinary Hearings Officer.
  • Oversee and/or conduct investigations pertaining to allegations of staff misconduct, Incarcerated Individual grievances, tort claims, and administrative segregation placements.
Duty Officer Rotation.
  • Serve as Facility Duty Officer on a rotational basis for notification of incidents at the facility per Department policies and Operational Memoranda.
  • Be available during non-business hours. Respond to the facility afterhours within one hour, make notifications, provide advise and act as a resource, provide delegate authority and authorization. Records calls and event details.
  • Attend required Emergency Management training.
Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED,

AND

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university whose accreditation is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA),

AND

Three years of juvenile or adult corrections experience in treatment, custody, community corrections or professional counseling or casework experience.

OR

Satisfactory completion of two years of college (60 semester or 90 quarter credits) and five years juvenile or adult corrections experience in treatment, custody, or community corrections or professional counseling or casework experience.

AND

Two years' experience as a supervisor. (This experience may be gained concurrently with the required experience above).

AND

Demonstrated ability to provide positive leadership in times of stress, conflict, and unforeseen events. Remain calm and rational while handling difficult situations to include, but not limited to volatile, threatening, or other crisis/emergency situations. Expertly intervene in response to threats.
Preferred/Desired Education, Experience, and Competencies:

Working knowledge of DOC Policies, RCW's, WAC's, and Operational Memoranda.

Working knowledge of offender management and supervision, including behavior
management, classification process, sanitation, security and safety.

Understanding of offender programs including preparation of offenders for transition back into society.
