Manager of Machinery Engineering - Roles and Responsibilities:

We are seeking a Lead Machinery Supervisor within our team located at Allentown, PA or Houston, TX or Buffalo, NY work location.

To lead the rotating equipment project delivery group within Air Products Regional Engineering organization for Air Products captive (Sale of Gas) and third party (Sale of Equipment) businesses. To ensure competitiveness, meeting project delivery schedules and budgets for the machinery work you're doing, efficient inter-disciplinary, inter-regional and external suppliers' interfaces, proper risk identification, management and mitigations, mentoring junior engineers and developing the group project and technical talents. The successful candidate needs to possess expertise in wide-ranging planning, decision-making, and communication accountabilities spanning the above factors.

This role requires understanding and translating business requirements into effective engineering & design strategies and delivering on all facets of bid and project commitments. The functional responsibilities include resource development, planning and management, leading short-term and long-term capabilities, capacities development and maintenance of quality, timeliness, and performance of group work.

The organizations portfolio is broad, both in terms of industrial gas technologies and scale (standard plants to mega projects in billions of dollars).

To fulfill the requirements of the position, the incumbent must develop collaborative working relationships with Engineering team members (within the Americas region and global), Operations, Project Execution, Commissioning and Procurement.

As a manager, much of the role will focus on the top tier and motivation of the regional machinery team including recruitment of new talent; training and mentoring of new and existing employees; career development planning; resource planning (short term and long term) including succession planning; goal setting, performance management and reviews, coupled with compensation planning; team communication, reward and recognition; and management of both process safety and personnel safety.

Work will include: consultation in proposal estimates and product development efforts, developing machinery engineering work processes assigned by the GFO (Global Functional Owner), workload planning, assignment of engineering resources, evaluating machinery both from a technical and commercial standpoint, working with, providing information to and seeking information from other engineering and project functions (Project Engineering, Process Engineering, Design, Construction, Operations, Purchasing, etc...), assigning resources to support installation and commissioning of machinery equipment in the field, assisting in fixing operating machinery problems, and resolving machinery related warranty issues. This role will also participate in and provide resources to key functional and supply chain programs such as development of Engineering Specifications and Standards, new supplier qualification and development.

Other work includes functional development related to Machinery. This includes the development of tools (computer programs, engineering specifications, procedures, etc.) which help to improve the Machinery Engineering work function and advancing the state of the art through machinery related R&D both in-house and with suppliers. Much of the work process is computer based and this position is expected to apply and enhance the computing platforms and software available.

Specific technical knowledge should include thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, heat transfer, mechanics, etc., typically evidenced by a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering, with extensive experience in turbomachinery design, selection and applications. Expertise in machine design, vibration analysis, machine dynamics, and manufacturing methods would be advantageous especially related to Oxygen and Process Gases Reciprocating and Centrifugal Compressor Design, Sound Analysis and Noise Abatement, , Blowers, FD & ID fans, High Pressure/High Temperature Process Pumps, Steam Turbines, Gas Turbines, Properties of Gases, Safe Handling of Flammable, Toxic, Cryogenic liquids, and Oxidizing Gases, Dry Gas Seal Systems, and understanding of API Standards, Air Separation, Chemical/Petroleum Process, and Electronics Industry requirements.

It is advantageous that the candidate has a broad to in-depth knowledge of all machinery used and the cycle/machinery optimization issues involved in all markets in which we challenge. Clear expertise in several technical specialty areas involving the Air Separation Industry and/or Chemical/Petroleum Industry type rotating equipment is apparent and respected throughout the industry. Typically, the candidate should have a consistent track record in the design, selection, application procurement, installation, commissioning, fixing, operation and repair of turbomachinery rotating equipment.

Required Skills / Abilities:

Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or similar field.
15+ years of experience in rotating machinery (both AP and/or other industry)
5+ years leading engineering teams in technical project execution.
Operational or field support experience is beneficial.
Experience in complex Root Cause Analysis is beneficial.
Knowledge of Air Products Product Lines is beneficial (ASU, Process Gases, Green Hydrogen, Standard Plants, LNG, Gasification)

Strong communication skills and a shown influential leader. Ability to work in a multi-functional organization with corporate and regional/local teams.

Education and Licensing Requirements:


Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or similar field.

15 years of proven experience in rotating machinery (both AP and/or other industry)

5+ years leading engineering teams in technical project execution.

The expected pay range is $115,750 - $193,100 plus bonus. This is the range that we reasonably expect to pay for this position as individual compensation decisions are based on a variety of factors.
