Job Summary: Responsible for providing paralegal services to the PCS Department and/or on as needed basis for other departments and staff members.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Handle all aspects of trust and estate administration, including: Marshalling assets and arranging for their valuation as necessary; Maintaining checkbook and banking records; Paying bills, and computing and disbursing beneficiary distributions; Computing and payment of executor and trustee commissions; and Preparation of formal and informal estate and trust accountings. Probate Court practice: Read and interpret Wills and trust instruments; Prepare and file all documents required to probate Wills; Prepare receipt and release agreements, disclaimers, affidavits, accounting petitions; and Handle issuance and revocation of letters and other miscellaneous proceedings, including preparation of petitions and overseeing service on interested parties. Prepare federal and state estate, gift and generation-skipping transfer tax returns; facilitate the filing of federal and state fiduciary income tax returns and estimated tax payments; and Assist with other department or Firm projects as needed.
Education, Skills and Experience:
The job of PCS Paralegal requires a 4 year college degree and a minimum of 1-2 years experience working with complex trusts and estates at a major law firm or bank. PCS Paralegals must have a knack with numbers to deal with the financial aspects of the job. A concentration or advanced degree in Accounting is beneficial. The job requires in-depth experience in all aspects of estate administration, accountings and tax filings; plus strong communication skills and the ability to successfully interface with Firm clients, partners and associates as well as attorneys and professionals from other law firms, companies, foundations, etc. In addition, the role requires advanced knowledge of Excel and other software applications used in estate planning and tax preparation. Because work is frequently done with tight deadlines, the PCS Paralegal must consistently produce an accurate work product while managing simultaneous projects and working independently to prioritize and complete tasks on-time.
