Coordinate repair and maintenance functions furnished operating fleet to minimize loss of revenue and cost repairs. Reviews repair request and compares request with previous work accomplished on ship concerned and similar vessels to determine that expenditures are economically sound. Prepare recommendations for work, and initiate procurement of materials. Inspect machinery, equipment or spaces outlined in work request, draws up job specifications, and obtain bids from contractors or shipyards to perform repairs. Maintain contact with contractors to ensure completion of work at minimum cost. Investigate machinery casualties to determine cause, and advice ship’s officers in methods of operations to prevent recurrence of casualty or maloperation. Maintain records of engineering costs of each vessel.
Requires at least two years of experience working as a Chief Engineer on ships.
