GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

We are seeking an empathetic and compassionate individual to join our team as a Peer Support Specialist. As a Peer Support Specialist, you will play a vital role in providing emotional support, advocacy, and resources to individuals facing mental health challenges. Your lived experience with mental health recovery will be the bridge to establish rapport, provide hope, and inspire individuals on their journey to wellness. As a Peer Support Specialist, you will have the opportunity to develop meaningful relationships with individuals in need and assist them in identifying and achieving their recovery goals. Your responsibilities will include providing emotional support, leading support groups, accompanying individuals to appointments, teaching wellness tools, advocating for their needs, and connecting them with community resources. This role will require empathy, effective communication skills, and the ability to establish trust and build rapport.

Provide emotional support and encouragement to individuals facing mental health challenges.
Lead support groups and facilitate discussions on relevant topics.
Advocate for individuals needs and assist them in navigating the mental health system.
Accompany individuals to appointments and help them communicate their needs effectively.
Assist individuals in developing and implementing personal recovery plans.
Connect individuals with community resources, such as housing, employment, and healthcare services.
Collaborate with other professionals and organizations to ensure comprehensive care for individuals.

Implement peer support services for adults with a mental illness. Provides support, information, referral, follow-up, and technical assistance to consumers and/or their families. Develops and maintains data collection system indicating the number of referrals, resources/services, unmet needs, and barriers to obtaining services for all interested parties. Helps individuals identify and acknowledge networks of support and provides them with the support and skills necessary to care for themselves. May provide peer mentoring, informal support and information and referral to resources, and helps others navigate through the process of education, mental health, and other social service systems. Peer specialists are fully integrated team members who provide highly individualized services in the community and promote client self-determination and decision-making. Peer providers also provide essential expertise and consultation to the entire team to promote a culture in which each clients point of view and preferences are recognized, understood, respected, and integrated into treatment, rehabilitation, and community self-help activities. Responsible for documenting all services provision as agency requires. This position requires community travel and a flexible work schedule to include some late hours and Saturday work. Works under the direction of the local clinic manager.

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications to be eligible for the position:

High school diploma or GED.
A person who is or has been a recipient of mental health services for persistent and severe mental illness for at least one year.
Must have a valid Texas drivers license or identification card.
Must be able to get to the job site each day.
Lived experience with mental health recovery for at least 1 year.
Knowledge of mental health resources and services.
Understanding of trauma-informed care principles.
Ability to maintain boundaries and confidentiality.

PREFERRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Fluent in Spanish/English.
Resident of Camino Real Community Services service area.
Reliable transportation with Texas Liability Insurance.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Should possess or demonstrate the ability to acquire a thorough understanding of all local, state, and federal health and human services programs with an emphasis on programs which serve adults with disabilities.
Ability to work independently, to organize work efficiently and to complete tasks within designated deadlines.
Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with other parents, professionals, and individuals.
Ability to work under supervision.
Ability to work courteously, effectively, and non-judgmentally with families of emotionally disturbed youth.
Ability to keep accurate records.
Knowledge of agencies and services for youth in the area, including county educational systems.
Willingness to travel and participate in educating and empowering parents and family members.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Ability to build partnerships with a wide range of individuals or organizations.
Ability to work under conditions requiring physical stamina and ability to work in a stressful environment.
