Leverage advanced and theoretical knowledge of material and polymer sciences to oversee the Company’s advanced materials team, which provides innovations and engineering of pliable polymer materials, including fibers, textiles, adhesives, films, flexible foams, nonwovens, and composites of these and other materials. These materials are used by Company customers in a multitude of industries including automotive, medical, and military.
Specific duties include:
• Manage the Company’s Innovation Center laboratory located in Burlington, NC and associated team members responsible for the research, development, testing, and engineering of the advanced materials as mentioned above.
• Provide guidance over laboratory equipment selection and testing methodology globally used in production and testing of the Company’s advanced materials.
• Lead the textile research activities involving material, chemical, construction, and technology development of new product innovations.
• Lead and at times participate in companywide product development teams to enhance project success probabilities and speed-to-market efficiencies regarding the Company’s advanced materials.
• Assure sustainability of Laboratory Accreditation to ISO 17025 and manage lab per requirements set forth in ISO 17025.
• Maintain on-time and accurate reporting of deliverables globally; these may include preproduction approval testing, product validation, and all testing required for advanced material product commercialization.
• Establish and maintain value-added research services regarding advanced materials, both internally and with customers.
• Serve as the Company’s liaison with customers to establish requirements for advanced materials being researched and produced by the team.
• Ensure compliance with Shawmut’s Product Phase Gate deliverables for lab management.
• Will supervise six professionals (6) with the following job titles: 1 lab supervisor, 5 lab technicians.
20% domestic travel required to various Shawmut facilities and unanticipated customer locations in the United States as needed. May telecommute 10% of the workweek from any U.S. location.

Minimum Requirements: Master’s degree or foreign equivalent degree in Textile Chemistry, Fiber and Polymer Science, Materials Science, or related quantitative field, plus three (3) years of experience in a management role leading the testing of product specifications for various textiles.Experience must include each of the following, which may be gained concurrently:
• Three (3) years of experience utilizing statistical and color/appearance measurement techniques for various textiles;
• Three (3) years of experience working with IATF, ASTM, AATCC & ISO standards;
• Three (3) years of experience utilizing polymers, fibers, and additives to create an optimized material and/process;
• Three (3) years of experience utilizing Elastomeric materials including TPU, TPE, PU, in the form of fibers or films or coatings or textiles and woven fabrics;
• Three (3) years of experience developing unique characteristics in existing materials through process chemistries including new polymers, polymer blends, polymer additives, chemical treatments, coatings, surface modifications; and
• Three (3) years of experience performing downstream commercial processes and collaborating with functions including weaving, dyeing, finishing, and designing textiles.
