MOUND BAYOU One of the nations most historic black culture sites is Mound Bayou, the oldest town in America founded by former slaves.
Mound Bayou was founded in 1887 by ex-slaves Isaiah T. Montgomery and Benjamin T. Green. Montgomerys home still stands nearby as a monument to the enterprise of newly freed slaves. The structure is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
On the grounds of Mound Bayous City Hall is a carved wooden plaque depicting famous black Americans. Mound Bayou is also home to the creative artisans at Peters Pottery. Started in 1998 by the four Woods brothers, the studio has produced pottery for fans worldwide.
Cleveland is a small town with a BIG vibe! This hip little town in the Mississippi Delta was named #2 Small Town to Visit in 2013 by Smithsonian Magazine and one of Southern Living's Best Small Towns in 2019.
Cleveland is a town overflowing with living history. The blues are very much alive in the Delta, and one of the best places to experience the heritage and culture that is the blues is Dockery Farms outside Cleveland. Often called the Birthplace of the Blues, Dockery Plantation was home to world-famous Delta blues musician, Charley Patton, and was recently honored with a marker on the Mississippi Blues Trail.
Just north of Cleveland lies the quaint town of Merigold, which is known the world over for its delicious restaurants, charming homes and sought-after pottery.
