Internship Summary
Western Resource Advocates (WRA) seeks an inquisitive and resourceful research intern to join our Clean Energy Program this summer. This internship will specifically perform research on local (municipal- and county-level) sustainability goals in Arizona and interdependencies with actions of Arizona utilities like Arizona Public Service, Salt River Project, and Tucson Electric Power. This research will then form the basis of a WRA-branded report. The intern will be credited as a co-author of or contributor to that report. The Sustainability Intern will be mentored by and report to the Clean Energy Director with additional guidance from the Government Affairs Director, Marketing and Communications Director, and Deputy Director of State Advocacy as well as the Arizona Clean Energy team.

Location
This position has the option to be fully remote in our seven stat region (AZ, CO, MT, NM, NV, UT or WY) or work from one of WRAs offices. WRA has offices in Salt Lake City, UT; Phoenix, AZ; Santa Fe, NM; Carson City, NV; Denver, CO; and Boulder, CO. The manager of this internship is based in Denver, CO.
Responsibilities
Prepare a research plan for the project. Conduct research on policy issues related to local (municipal- and county-level) sustainability goals in Arizona. Conduct proactive phone, email, and other outreach to key stakeholders to gather necessary information. Prepare a draft memo summarizing which Arizona local governments have sustainability goals and what those sustainability goals are. Identify areas where local sustainability goals are dependent on action by APS, TEP, or SRP. Incorporating feedback on the draft memo, prepare a draft report summarizing the research as a final deliverable for the internship. Deliver a presentation on the research to WRA staff and potentially external stakeholders. Required Qualifications
Strong research and analytic skills. Excellent communicator, written and verbal. Experience managing research projects and using research tools and systems. Independently motivated to take ownership of projects and demonstrate follow-through to complete tasks. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Desire to learn about complex policy topics, and the confidence to ask questions about nuanced issues. An interest, or academic/professional background in public policy, economics, sustainability, or another related field. This internship is open to both students and non-students. Salary And Benefits
Interns are paid at $18.25 per hour. This is a part-time internship with an expectation to work up to 20 hours a week. WRA regularly works with students to help them obtain school credit for their internships. Since this is a temporary internship position, interns are not eligible for any benefits, including, but not limited to: vacation and sick leave; health, vision, and dental insurance; life, short-term, and long-term disability insurance; and the 401(k)-retirement plan. WRA is happy to loan interns a laptop for the duration of their internship. The internship will take place during the Summer of 2024.
