POSITION TITLE: Packaging Engineer



JOB POSTING FORMAT:



Research, design, develop, prototype, evaluate and test packaging solutions for cold-chain, control room temperature, dry- ice and other temperature sensitive packaging systems for transporting medical and thermally sensitive products in accord with ISTA and customer's specifications. Conduct thermal and structural simulations (CFD, FEA) for new packaging designs using design skills and ANSYS or SmartCAE, SolidWorks or Fusion 360, and other industrial simulation software.Test and verify new packaging designs/solutions physically in all types of environmental and transportation conditions based on ISTA standards and customer specifications. Responsible for pre-qualification and qualification reports for new packaging solutions based on test results. Complete feasibility, cost analysis and design rules for new packaging solutions. Responsible for R&D to discover new environment friendly packaging materials. Conduct research, thermal conductivity testing, R-value measurements and experiments to discover bio-degradable insulation materials, vacuum insulated panels and other insulation materials. Conduct research, thermal conductivity testing, specific heat testing, phase change temperature testing, and freezing/thawing testing to discover different types of ice packs and phase change materials to solve customer specific packaging problems. Prepare new materials and plan integration to packaging solutions. Prepare documents and test results to submit patent applications for new discoveries. Maintain R&D, Maintenance and Quality controlling documents in accord with ISO 9001:2015 certification. Oversee manufacturing process of thermal packaging systems; installation of heavy mechanical packaging machines (e. g. Multivac Thermoforming Machine, Solid and Liquid Filling Machines, Hotwire CNC Foam Cutter Machine, Box Making Machine, Environmental Chamber etc.), and design and assemble custom parts for these and other related heavy machinery; design and plan production line for ice-packs and other packaging goods; prepare G-code for CNC and other production machines; ensure QC of the production line; troubleshoot and provide guidance to mechanical packaging machine operators; and create scheduled and non-scheduled maintenance of heavy mechanical machinery. Provide support and troubleshooting on-site to customers. Collaborate with ISTA certified testing laboratories to perform physical and thermal testing in accord with customer specifications.



EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Master’s Degree in Mechanical or Packaging Engineering related subject plus two (2) years of experience in Mechanical Engineering or in a related occupation involving developing new packaging solutions from initial concept/design.



SKILLS SET REQUIREMENTS:

Experience must include numerical analysis and thermal simulations using ANSYS, SmartCAE or similar software; Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling using ANSYS (Fluent) or similar software; Computer-Aided Design (CAD) using SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or similar software; G-code preparation for CNC machines; Mechanical and thermal package testing covering shock, vibration, compression, environmental chamber; Practical experience with environmental friendly (biodegradable/compostable) and traditional (XPS/EPS) thermal insulation materials; Working knowledge/experience with ice packs and phase change materials; Custom cold-chain shipper development from scratch; and Knowledge of thermal conductivity and R-value measurement mechanism. Up to 25% international and domestic travel.
