Position Highlights

The University of Arizona STEM Learning Center is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the position of ASEMS Transfer Specialist II (Research Program Administration Officer II) to support our S-STEM Bridge and College of Engineering students. The successful candidate will be a dynamic, critical thinker, and self-starter who enjoys working in a team environment. The candidate will have a strong desire to serve underrepresented students in STEM and will demonstrate the skills, abilities, knowledge, and demeanor to identify, serve, and retain promising students in STEM degree fields from underserved populations who are transferring to UArizona from a community college. The position will teach students the skill sets and strategies required to be competitive academically and professionally in STEM fields, while also helping them to develop the communication skills and confidence necessary to build a professional network of STEM faculty, mentors, and peers. This role will contribute to the development, facilitation, implementation, evaluation, and oversight of our transfer grant opportunities, including the NSF Pima-UAZ S-STEM Bridge grant. This individual will report to the ASEMS Director and collaborate with appropriate ASEMS staff and campus and community college partners to monitor and support STEM students needs.

The STEM Learning Center is situated under the Office of Societal Impact within Research, Innovation & Impact at the University of Arizona. Duties & Responsibilities

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the operational and administrative activities of the core components of the ASEMS Transfer program, including recruitment and outreach activities, student meetings, programming, monitoring and supporting student needs, student staff supervision, and curriculum development and instruction.
  • Provide ongoing guidance and support under minimal guidance to a caseload of ASEMS Program participants to monitor project plans (including timelines and resources). Follow up on student issues that may lead to stopping out of the University or leaving STEM.
  • Assess scholars academic goals and needs, document progress in participants' files, share strategies and resources on academic success, and connect scholars to campus resources and monitoring student progress by using a tiered mentoring system.
  • Plan, develop, lead, assist, and evaluate the ASEMS program activities to promote student retention and build community related to the culture of ASEMS. Activities include workshops, seminars, and conferences, and other types of events to strengthen students' skills/knowledge related to research, career, and finances, in efforts to promote and retain students in STEM majors, leading to graduation.
  • Monitor student progress by reviewing peer mentor, tutor, and faculty mentor meeting notes, and by checking regularly with ASEMS scholars, especially those with high needs.
  • Participate and assist with recruitment and outreach activities to inform eligible STEM students of the ASEMS program benefits and activities.
  • Facilitate and evaluate the curriculum development, instruction, and evaluation of the ASEMS courses including Success in STEM (support) and Research Readiness course (instructor of record).
  • Design assignments to meet the learning objectives of the Research Readiness course and the ASEMS Program.
  • Provide office hours for scholars to seek guidance about the course and to follow up on any issues hindering their success as STEM transfer scholars.
  • Manage the D2L pages, grades assignments, and posts grades in a timely manner.
  • Support scholars in identifying and securing undergraduate research positions. This involves developing and understanding of and building relationships with undergraduate research partners including campus partners and faculty.
  • Organize the hiring, supervising, training, and professional development of student scholar staff (peer mentors and learning coaches/tutors).
  • Coordinate and collaborate with the ASEMS Director to facilitate data collection and assessment to formulate program strategies, policies, and goals designed to develop core program components.
  • Collect, analyze, and compile data on student demographics and experiences in STEM and our program to provide programmatic reports on student challenges, successes, and services used to contribute to grant reports and inform future STEM student support initiatives.
  • Contribute to the development, facilitation, implementation, evaluation, and oversight of grant/funding opportunities and annual reports, including the NSF Pima-UAZ S-STEM Bridge grant.
  • Serve as a contact for internal and external stakeholders to coordinate student activities, exchange information, and compile and deliver reports on student engagement in the program.
  • Additional duties may be assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Understanding of the unique needs and strengths of community college transfer students in STEM fields.
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity in education and knowledge of the unique needs and strengths of historically marginalized students.
  • Knowledge of best practices in student development, academic support, career counseling, and retention, especially asset-based mentoring approaches.
  • Ability to formulate creative ideas on how to support the overall success of the students the program serves.
  • Excellent skills demonstrated in writing, public speaking, workshop facilitation and/or teaching.
  • Willing to work night and weekends, as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience and 3 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in a STEM or health sciences discipline, education, counseling, or a related field
  • Research experience
  • Experience implementing retention programming for historically marginalized students
