The Role

Working in and reporting to the University Office of Advancement, the Assistant Dean of Advancement for the School of International Service (SIS) is the principal fundraiser for SIS at American University. The Assistant Dean of Advancement works with and on behalf of the Dean of SIS, shaping and executing plans for fundraising to meet the financial needs of the Deans academic priorities for the School. The Assistant Dean of Advancement works primarily in the area of major and principal gifts for fundraising for SIS. The Assistant Dean of Advancement plans, implements, and oversees the fundraising program for SIS.

The Assistant Dean of Advancement serves as a key partner to the Dean and as an ambassador of SIS. The Assistant Dean of Advancement supervises the activities of the Director of Development, SIS, and Development Coordinator. They work as a collaborative team in support of donor cultivation, solicitation, stewardship, alumni programming, and special events. In coordination with the Dean, the Assistant Dean of Advancement and team strategically recruit and staff members for the SIS Board of Advisors. The Assistant Dean of Advancement and SIS team strive to maximize the Board of Advisors effectiveness, working closely with the Deans office to establish agendas and programs for meetings and communications

Responsibilities

Essential Functions (required: Percentage of effort for each Essential Function totaling 100%)

  • (40%) With the Dean and independently, aggressively work major and principal gifts portfolio under Divisional rules and guidelines, actively setting and executing strategies on assigned major and principal gift prospects, meeting or exceeding established benchmarks for visits, contacts, and solicitations, and securing gifts that support the academic priorities of the Dean, other units, or the University as a whole.

  • (30%)Develop, execute, and manage, fundraising strategies, priorities, schedules, and tactics for the Dean of the School of International Service, including but not limited to: (1) identifying and engaging prospects around the Deans academic priorities for the School; (2) planning travel and individual meetings; (3) managing regular communication with key prospects; (4) managing all aspects of the Schools Board of Advisors, including developing strategy to cultivate and solicit council members for leadership giving at SIS.

  • (20%) Lead, inspire, and manage the School of International Service Advancement team: (Director of Development, and Development Coordinator). Develop major gift strategies and revenue expectations, donor stewardship initiatives, and special event plans. Delegate and assign associated tasks, including the creation and design of related publications.

  • (5%) Work with AUs Annual Giving team to effectively manage annual giving techniques and messages utilized in AUs direct marketing and phone programs, assuming responsibility for making sure the information about the School of International Service used in these programs is accurate, up to date, and in line with the Schools current fundraising objectives. Work closely with the Director of Development, Annual Giving, on annual Deans letter or other equivalent solicitation pieces, ensuring that they occupy a reasonable and productive spot in AUs direct marketing calendar.

  • (5%) Other duties as assigned in support of the objectives of the Assistant Vice President, Development.

Work Environment

  • This position requires travel approximately 25-40% of the time. The position also requires occasional evening and weekend work.
  • 35 hours/week
  • This position oversees two full-time staff members

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree; Master's degree preferred
  • 5-8 years of relevant experience; including supervisory experience
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills

American University offers a competitive compensation package, including a salary range of $140,000-$170,000 and comprehensive benefits.
